What is Cancer — and How Big is the Problem Worldwide (and in India)
Cancer is not just one disease — it’s a group of diseases in which abnormal cells grow out of control. Instead of behaving like normal cells, cancer cells may multiply, invade nearby tissues, and sometimes spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. Depending on where they start, and how early they are detected, cancers have different behaviours and outcomes.
Global Scale: The Growing Burden of Cancer
• Worldwide, cancer is a leading cause of death and morbidity. Every year, tens of millions of new cancer cases are diagnosed globally.
• The global cancer burden is rising — partly because of aging populations (older people have higher cancer risk) and partly due to changing lifestyles.
Cancer in India: A Growing Concern
• In India, cancers of various types impose a heavy burden on patients, families, and the health system.
• With increasing life expectancy, changing diets and lifestyles, and rising exposures to risk factors (like pollution, tobacco, etc.), cancer incidence in India has been steadily increasing over the past decades.
• Many experts expect that — unless there is greater awareness, prevention, early detection — the number of new cancer cases in India will continue to rise significantly.
